Soke David Cook promoted to 9th Dan! 2008-10-22

Soke David Cook promoted to 9th Dan!

Soke Cook 9th Dan and Soke Ruiz 10th Dan

We were very honoured to be invited by Soke Ruiz, 10th Dan to the International Karate Kobudo Union SummerCamp in Oxford, Georgia USA! The camp started on June the 4th and ended on June the 8th. The general schedule of the camp started with early morning training at 06.30 and then there were two sessions during the day and one in the evening. The duration of the sessions was between 2 to 3 hours long and the focus was on technique! The camp took place at historical ground at Emory University, which is a beautiful place with big shadow trees that were refreshing in the 37° C summer heat! Attending at the camp were many high Dan grades, a lot of them over 5th Dan! The atmosphere was humble and polite and everybody was very helpful to each other and to us!

Already at the beginning of our first training session Soke Ruiz lined us up and called Soke Cook up in front of everybody! Soke Ruiz has been a long time friend to Soke Cook and our Soke sees him as his mentor. If you look under the heading “Founder & Grandmaster” on our website you will find that Soke Ruiz has been a big part of our masters budo career! Soke Ruiz held a long speech that was filled with friendly emotions before he announced that he had decided to award Soke Cook with 9th Dan! One could see that Soke Cook was deeply moved by this great honor and the participants’ applause and cheering had almost no ending! Soke Ruiz asked Soke Ruiz putting on the Tsuba on the new beltfor Soke Cook´s 8th Dan belt and after that he took up the new 9th Dan belt! It was a beautiful Obi with red colour on one side and black and red on the other side with golden kanji! Soke Ruiz used a Tsuba from a Katana to tie the new belt on Soke Cook! I must say that the Obi looked perfect on Soke Cook and that it is the correct belt for a Grandmaster to wear!

During the rest of the camp we had a lot of good training sessions! On two sessions the participants had the opportunity to try TSG Shura (Fighting) Karate! This was highly appreciated and they also wanted to try some grappling, but there was no time for that, however we promised to send them our instruction DVD’s of our Grappling Drill and also DVD’s of our Shura Karate Kata.

As a whole the camp was very good and meeting all the new people and making new friends was really nice, especially that we had the chance to meet Soke Ruiz in person was a great honour! At our departure they all wished us back in the future and we also made an open invitation to all of them if they have the chance to come to Sweden in the future!

Kind regards,

Shuji Dai Mikael Forsman
